LEDs (Light Emitting Diodes) are electronical conductors, converting electricity directly into light: they offer a maximum light-output for the minimal power they need.

LEDs are produced in 5 base colors: white, blue, red, yellow and green.
A most recent development is the introduction of RGB LEDs: these LEDs contain the 3 base colors (red, green, blue) into one unit. The base colors can be driven seperatly, allowing to obtain any color of the spectrum.

Compared with traditional lightingsystems, LEDs have many important advantages :

Their consumption is astonishing low, they are maintenance free and they have a very long lifetime.

When functioning, the units produce no heat, which, in combination with the low voltage, garantees maximum security. This is a big advantage when used eg. around swimming-pools or in areas where children are allowed.
